Head and Shoulders Shampoo Vs. Monday Shampoo

While walking down the different aisles and seeing all the different types of shampoo, things can get pretty overwhelming when you are trying to figure out what is best for your scalp and your hair type. Each brand you see is promising that if you use their product, you will have the healthiest, shiniest, and most perfect scalp. Two of the most popular brands on the market are Head & Shoulders, which is promoted for dandruff control, and Monday Shampoo, a newer brand known for its trendy packaging that focuses on affordable luxury and clean ingredients. The reason why I chose these brands is because my hair type is very complicated when it comes towards the weather in Tri-Cities. My scalp has always had dandruff, which makes my hair greasy overnight I have been dealing with my scalp being this way ever since I was a kid. So, if you have straight hair, dandruff, itchy scalp, and greasy hair I’m sure this will be a very helpful review.

Backgrounds On Each Brand

Head & Shoulders has been a leader in dandruff shampoo for over 60 years. Head & shoulders was manufactured by Procter & Gamble, its very widely available and recommended by dermatologists. Their reputation strongly relies on its clinical strength in treating dandruff and itchy scalp with active ingredients like “pyrithione zinc” which is an antimicrobial and antifungal agent.

On the other hand, Monday Shampoo, is a newer product in the shampoo industry from New Zealand. The brand markets itself as “salon quality” at an affordable price, free from sulfates and parabens or any other ingredients that would be harsh on the scalp. Monday’s minimalist cute pink bottles have become super popular due to their aesthetic appeal and promise of clean beauty without bad results.

Ingredients and Formulation

The key differentiator of Head & Shoulders is its active ingredient pyrithione zinc, which I explained before, targets the fungi that causes dandruff on your scalp. This medicinal ingredient is very effective for anyone who is struggling with an itchy and oily scalp or persistent flakes. Besides just the active ingredient, Head & Shoulders formulas contain cleansing agents, fragrances, and conditioning properties for maximum hair growth and cleanliness.

Monday Shampoo takes a different approach, its formula is sulfate free, which is gentle on the hair and scalp, especially for color treated or dry hair. Monday products are also free of any parabens and cruelty free; it’s super appealing to people who are looking for more natural or ethical beauty choices, they include ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and hydrolyzed rice protein for nourishment and smoothness. However, while watching other reviews of people who have used this product for a longer period of time tend to find out that the shampoo can build up over time particularly with oily scalps because it doesn’t have the same strong cleansing surfactants as more traditional shampoos. “`

Effectiveness

I know that these two shampoos are very different in what they are marketing, and what they specifically target when it comes towards your scalp and hair, but while using them myself I could tell two different things between the shampoos. I decided to use the Monday shampoo for about three days and it has worked wonders for my hair type and scalp despite being oily and having dandruff. I noticed that after using it my hair felt fuller and I could go longer without washing my hair. While using Head & Shoulders for about three days as well, I did not notice a lot of change. My hair ended up going back to the way it used to be flaky, itchy, and oily which was surprising to me, my hair did not feel as full as before and it felt like Head & Shoulders shampoo just had no effect on my hair. Generally, Monday Shampoo is best suited for people with mild scalp concerns who just prioritize hydration and a gentle wash over medicated treatment. I came to love this brand as a product for my hair, but only long term use will show whether it causes oil build up or not.

Scent and User Experience

Head & Shoulders has a clean, almost medicinal scent that varies across their different lines. Some versions add fragrances to their shampoos like green apple or ocean lift to make the experience of using Head & Shoulders more pleasant. The texture is creamy and lathers well, giving whoever is using the shampoo a feeling of a deep clean to their hair and scalp.

Monday Shampoos scent profile is more modern and appealing to younger people like myself. Monday’s shampoos often have light or floral fresh fragrances that feel luxurious and linger in the hair, for subtle scent throughout the day. The packaging also stands out when compared to Head & Shoulders, its minimalist pastel pink bottles are often left on display in showers, doubling as bathroom décor.

Pricing and Accessibility

One of Head & Shoulders biggest advantages is its availability and price point. Its always stocked in almost every grocery store, drugstore, and big box retailer worldwide.  A standard bottle is about $5.79 and there are often multi pack deals or family sizes that are available. On the other hand, the Monday Shampoo is also positioned as affordable, but its more of a mid-range price point compared to drugstore staples. It is sold at retailers like Target, Ulta, and some grocery stores, but it may not be as universally stocked as Head & Shoulders just yet, the price for the smallest size (354ml) is $6.97.

Sustainability and Brand Ethics

One of the major reasons for Monday Shampoos popularity is its emphasis on clean beauty and sustainability. Monday is like mentioned before cruelty free, vegan, and uses recyclable packaging. This aligns with the growing consumer demand for ethical beauty products that look good and do good. While Head & Shoulders, being a big part of major corporation, has made strides in sustainability, but still uses traditional formulations and packaging. In recent years, it has introduced recyclable bottles partnered with beach cleanups to collect ocean plastic, which is a step in the right direction, but its image is still more medicinal than ecofriendly.

Pros and Cons

I have made a list of pros and cons between both head & Shoulders, and the Monday Shampoo

Head & Shoulders

Pros: Widely Available and budget friendly, options for different hair types, proven dandruff control to its users.

Cons: Contains sulfates and parabens in some of their formulas, the scent can feel too clinical for some users

Monday Shampoo

Pros: Attractive packaging and clean ingredients, Sulfate free and cruelty free, pleasant modern fragrances.

Cons: May not cleanse oily scalps deeply enough, not formulated for medical dandruff treatment, slighter higher price per ounce.

Conclusion

When choosing between Head & Shoulders and Monday Shampoo, should depend on your priorities and what you want to target. But the marketing may not always be as it seems, if you suffer from chronic dandruff or scalp irritation, Head & Shoulders would be a great shampoo to try, its functional for many, and straightforward, while it may not work for everyone like myself it is still a really good choice and maybe this shampoo will work for your scalp. If your scalp is relatively healthy and your focus is on gentle, stylish hair care with clean ingredients, Monday Shampoo is an amazing choice. It delivers, a more luxurious experience at a fair price, with the bonus of pretty pink packaging and eco conscious branding. In the end, both brands have loyal followers for good reasons, all it takes is just you trying it out and figuring out what works best for your hair. Your decision in choosing what shampoo to try whether it be Head & Shoulders or the Monday Shampoo should target your scalps needs, your preference for ingredients, and whether you lean more toward clinically proven results or trendy clean beauty.
